How to Build an Online Business When You Have a Job

I know that many of you out there are really hustling trying to build a business that supports a freedom based lifestyle. And you’re not there, yet, because your day job is taking up your time and energy. I hear you. I’m sharing four steps to build your business online with less time and faster results. Follow these and you’ll be handing in that resignation letter faster than you ever dreamed possible.

Step #1: Understand your competitive field and your place in it.

There’s so much saturation in the online market across various different fields that it’s crucial for you to be specific about who you are, what you do, who you help, and how you help them in a way that no one else can! So you must research your competition. Follow them. Know them, their products and services, how they offer them and at what price points. Once you have a clear picture of your market and your competitors, you can evaluate your brand and determine if your products and services are unique or common? Do they fill a gap in your market? Or are your offerings just like everyone else’s?

Step #2: Specialize in a specific niche within your topic that you’re passionate about.

Even 7 years ago, you could get away with being more generic and vague in your marketing message and still get traction. Those days are gone now. I can’t tell you how many clients come to us with generic websites that sell commodities. Commodities are just generic products and services that someone could get anywhere and from anyone. If there’s nothing unique about you, your product, or service, then your customers will feel free to buy from your competitors instead of you.

For example, if you’re a weight loss expert, don’t try to help everyone lose weight. You need to understand who is the type of person that you are an expert at getting results for? That’s called your ideal customer persona. You must get specific on who is your ideal client or customer and then craft your content and marketing message to that person.

Step #3: Survey that niche, find out what their true pain points are and create a unique offer that solves that problem.

So many entrepreneurs fail because they pour time and money into creating a product or service that no one buys. Don’t let this happen to you! Keep your finger on the pulse of your market. Ask what kinds of solutions they want and would buy, and only create those.

Step #4: Start generating revenue from that offer while you’re testing its viability.

How do you do that? Build a simple sales funnel and start directing traffic to it. This is also called the “minimum viable funnel.” What is a Sales Funnel? A sales funnel is a series of steps designed to nurture your ideal clients and customers into a buying decision. Just because you have a website that sells something, that doesn’t mean you have a sales funnel. That’s because your funnel is an automated system that nurtures your prospects by building your Know-Like-and Trust factor with them. Your prospects start their relationship with you at the top of your funnel with your lead magnet.

The free resource that you give them that helps solve their problem. When they optin for your resource by giving you their name and best email address, you send them a series of automated emails that go deeper on their pain points and give them more value and education. This also positions you as the go-to expert in your field.
I know sales funnels can seem too complicated and overwhelming. That’s where the minimum viable funnel comes into the picture. When you’re just starting out online and testing your offer, you don’t need a complicated funnel. You need a simple funnel that leads prospects to your offer and makes them feel that buying from you is a no-brainer.

So if you’re working a full time job right now and you feel like your business is growing way too slowly because you don’t have enough time to build momentum, your sales funnel will become your new employee. One that works really hard for you by nurturing all of your prospects towards your offer even while you’re working at your day job! That’s how you make the transition. Once your sales funnel is up, running, and converting sales, you can start to replace the income from your job!
